Overview

In the information society, the terminologies are essential for a rigorous and effective specialized communication. Terminologists have a central role in any business in which the discursive skills, knowledge and transfer organization are required. Describing the concept, finding the best the name in a given context, is part of the terminologist's job, and constructing a notional system is a central task of his activity. This raises the question of methods and tools for defining the conceptual systems, but also the tools for definiting and managing terminologies. In this context, ontologies, as defined in knowledge engineering, offer new perspectives and new markets for terminologists.

Reciprocally, in the context of many applications based on ontologies, whether for information processing applications or knowledge management, the problem arises of how to take the terminology into account in the acquisition of domain knowledge. If the corpus of specialized texts are a preferred source of information, it remains to define the analytical methods to deal with the differences between texts and formal conceptualization. Terminology can respond by distinguishing between linguistic and conceptual dimensions. It also establishes the theoretical and methodological principles useful for building ontologies.

Objectives

This training session aims to promote collaboration between professionals in the language and knowledge-engineering fields. It also aims to present theories, methods and tools for building ontologies for terminology, and to provide:

  • professionals in the language field with a systematic and methodological approach (formal reasoning) for the definition of conceptual system, especially useful for the operationalization of terminologies;
  • professional knowledge of language skills necessary to acquire knowledge from linguistic resources.

Target audiences

Linguists, Terminologists, translators, librarians, cognitives engineers, computer scientist ...
